Dear John
Neither Truss nor Sunak offers much hope on cost of
living
Johnson is AWOL and both contenders for the top job are
part of this government’s failure to act.
This Government is
sleep-walking the country into a nightmare. With spiralling costs
piling on ordinary people, now is the time for serious action. Action
that neither our PM nor the potential PMs-in-waiting seem ready to
take.
It is a bleak state of affairs, and
what makes it even bleaker is that where they could be taking urgent
action on the fundamental crisis affecting us all, they are instead
expending their energies on an ideological, authoritarian
agenda.
If
you haven’t yet read our blog on the democracy-deleting Bills this
Government is trying to push through, take a look
now.
Whoever the next Prime Minister
is, and whatever shape their Cabinet takes, it is clear they committed
to continuing with legislation which breaks international law (like
the Northern Ireland Protocol Bill), which weakens your rights (like
the Bill of Rights Bill) and which clamps down on your right to
freedom of expression (the Public Order Bill).
Instead of dealing with the
important stuff and helping alleviate the stresses pressing on us all,
the Government looks set to expend huge amounts of energy and time on
systematically pulling apart and replacing the democratic traditions
and history of our country.
As conversations about the cost
of living dominate headlines, the Government may start to find it
easier to sneak through some of this troublesome legislation while the
focus is elsewhere.
So we have to remain vigilant,
and call the Government out on its extraordinary decision to carry on
stifling our freedoms while we remain in a crisis.
Best wishes,
Maheen Behrana
