Hey friends,
Look, we know it feels a bit early to be solidifying plans for October and November. We get it, you’re cool and spontaneous and you just follow where the ~vibes~ take you. But we’ve got something cooler than whatever it is the kids do these days: powering the polls!
That’s right, today is Poll Worker Recruitment Day and it’s time to solidify your poll working plans for 2022. We know most of you circled your calendars for this date ages ago, but for those of you who aren’t nerds, here’s the deal.
Polls have historically been (under)staffed by elderly members of our communities who have been doing the job for years. You may remember 2020, when the pandemic sparked massive shortages of poll workers, threatening access to the ballot box, especially in communities of color. Thankfully, 700,000 people stepped up to do their civic duty and minimized disruptions like long lines or closed voting stations.
We’re already hearing reports of poll worker shortages for the 2022 midterms, and election officials are getting ready to make decisions about how many polling locations they will be able to have open, and where. All of the work we do to get out the vote won’t matter if the polling station can’t stay open.
Sign up to be a poll worker in your community. It’s one of the most effective ways to help make our democracy work and you may even get paid!
