A note from from Mayor Brian Turnbull...

** NORTHVILLIANS,
------------------------------------------------------------

Over the next few weeks, I am going to wind down summer by writing about experiences on our rivers in Northville, and also our Gravel Pits where many of us swam in the heat of the summer. Then I will transition to fall with Labor Day and Schools as classes begin for the year.

So, let’s begin with Rivers. A week ago, I had a chance to participate in the clean-up plan for one of our Riverwalk sections which will run by the historic Northville Well and water wheel on S. Main Street. I took the opportunity to strap on my waders and boots and walk down the middle of the historic Rouge River from the Mill Race Village to the tunnel that connects the Rouge to the Johnson Creek. Later that day, I also ventured into the Johnson Creek at the Fish Hatchery Park and worked my way to Custard Time/Good Time Party Store...it was quite a wade!

Before progressing to how the rivers run through Northville, let’s look at what’s going on in our Village today:

Events/Info
* Dancing in the Ville – Town Square, Wednesday evenings 6:30-8:00 PM. Arthur Murray teachers provide lessons for a variety of dance genres (all levels).

* Summer Concerts every Friday & Saturday at 7:00 PM – Downtown

* Farmers Market – Take in Northville’s Award-Winning Market, Thursdays (7/Sheldon)

* Mill Race Village – Enjoy the summer and get some Victorian history to boot. Stroll the Village on Sundays and peer in the open buildings where docents will answer your questions.

* Art Exhibit at Art House on Cady St. – Till August 20^th. See the City through artists’ eyes, with displays of 70 original oils, acrylics and watercolors by 27 Michigan artists…visit their art online - Link ([link removed])

* Music at Maybury on Mondays – 7:00 PM, enjoy these concerts. Last one on August 26.

* Annual Old Timers history lunch gathering 9/20, Genitti’s – 108 E. Main, 11:00 AM gathering, 11:30 lunch 12:00 – History presentation & Senior of the Year announcement – Link ([link removed])

Let's transition to how the River Runs through it...the Ville that is!
* Many of you know how important our rivers have been to the development of our community. During the early 1800’s, the first grist mills in the Michigan Territory were here in town. From these beginnings, we transitioned into the Industrial Revolution using our hydraulic power to run the manufacturing machines. And now today, we are engaging in building Riverwalk pathways on the shores of our beautiful rivers for all in southeastern Michigan to enjoy.

* In the Detroit area, everything is downriver from Northville because we are the highest point in Wayne County, and most notably, the headwaters for multiple counties’ water systems. The various rivers that come together in our community are: The Upper & Middle Rouge Rivers, Johnson Creek and Randolph Drain.

* As I mentioned earlier, I had the chance to wade down both the Rouge and the Johnson Creek … the experience was almost as special as being on the holy waters of the Au Sable River in the Grayling area. Some stretches are unbelievably scenic, and others will become so as we work to clean up the river and ready its banks for the riverwalk pathways in the years to come.

* I traversed these rivers as a child and haven’t taken this trek in recent years. We are so fortunate to have the flowing fresh spring waters bubbling into our streams around the city.

* From all four historic Northville boroughs (Cabbage Town, Beal Town, Orchard Heights, and the Historic District) one can experience the flow of the river. Slow down some afternoon and sit by the river at Ford Field or the Mill Race Village. Walk the riverbank at Fish Hatchery Park or the entrance of Rural Hill Cemetery, the creek by the Beal Street Bridge or Hines Park where the Rouge crosses by Custard Time.

* If you are adventurous, slap on your old waders and walk down the middle of the stream. To prep you for potential sightings, I witnessed various trout, a glimpse of a perch, a river otter, deer, raccoons, turtles, frogs and ducks among the wildflowers and scenic beauty of the flowing stream. The wade-walk is not for the faint of heart, so I would encourage most folks to STAY ON THE BANKS and enjoy our waterways from up top!

Keep that Northville Summer Faith & Enjoy the Rivers that run through it!
