Friend —
Last week our worst fears were realized when reports broke that Facebook handed over a 17-year-old’s private messages to Nebraska law enforcement. Now, she’s being prosecuted for having an abortion.[1]
We’re not going to sugarcoat it: As pregnancy is increasingly criminalized in post-Roe America, a private message or simple search could be used against any of us. That’s why it’s so critical to double down on our work to protect our digital privacy rights — because this is only the beginning.
Can we count on your support in the fight to protect your digital privacy rights? The stakes are high and we need you with us.

Since we shared this disturbing story last week, thousands of you have demanded that Facebook protect its users and keep private messages truly private.
But we can’t stop there. We’re continuing to work directly with tech platforms to get these companies to adopt and enforce rules that would keep your location, searches and data safe. We’re also working with lawmakers to pass data-privacy legislation so your data can’t be handed over to law enforcement without a warrant.
But we can’t do it without you. We rely on grassroots fundraising from emails like the one you’re reading right now to pay for our lawyers and public-interest lobbyists, research and ads, organizers on the ground, and training for journalists and community members.

Until we strengthen digital-privacy rights, our location data, search histories and more will be used to surveil, harass and criminalize people as states intensify their attacks on reproductive care. We need to act quickly to protect our digital rights and other civil rights.
In solidarity,
Rose and the rest of the Free Press Action team
