Just one week from today, on Tuesday, August 23, from 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. I will be honored to host the 20th Annual Women's Equality Day Luncheon. This event is a special one, as we celebrate the achievements and progress of women who have fought for women's rights in Maryland, while bringing awareness to the challenges are are still present today. The theme this year will be Get Out Her Vote! There is no question that critical issues for women across our district, our state, and our country are on the ballot this year. I hope you will join me for this important occasion to help mobilize women's voices in the Fifth District ahead of the midterms this November.
I am excited to share that my friend and colleague Rep. Lucy McBath (GA-06) will be our keynote speaker at this year's event. She has been a fierce advocate in Congress for mothers and women. In 2012, Lucy lost her teenage son to an act of gun violence. This tragic event sparked her advocacy against gun violence and a successful run for Congress. In the House, Lucy has focused on passing laws to help our children and families including numerous pieces of legislation that have passed the House, from universal background checks for all gun sales to "Red Flag Laws" to limit access to firearms for those who are potentially dangerous. I look forward to welcoming her as the keynote speaker at the 20th Annual Women's Equality Day Luncheon.
