Last week, the FBI executed a search warrant on former president Donald Trump’s private Mar-a-Lago residence. We now know that the warrant shows the former president is under investigation for potential Espionage Act violations, obstruction of justice, and removing or destroying records.

Let me make this very clear: No one is above the law. If any person in this country commits a crime, especially a crime that presents an extraordinary national security threat, that person should be held accountable after a fair and just investigation.

Unfortunately, Trump and his supporters are using this investigation as a rallying cry to justify their extremist views that are further dividing our country. One supporter attempted to overtake an FBI office and other supporters are making public calls for war.

This cannot stand. Our democracy is under serious attack.

We already know that Michigan is a top target for this extremism. Several of Trump’s biggest supporters are running for state office in Michigan and still deny the results of the 2020 election. Their goal is to deteriorate the confidence Michigan voters have in our election system so they can use that distrust to their advantage.

One of Trump’s supporters is challenging my own seat in Congress on November 8th. She ran for Congress in 2020 in a different district and has tweeted a slew of divisive, hateful comments that call for stronger border security and mirrored Trump’s own tweets on the campaign trail.
The hate-filled, divisive rhetoric shared by both GOP challengers isn’t what Michigan’s 6th District stands for, and I am working to bring us together, not to tear us apart.

We need to stand together to work against the hateful, divisive rhetoric that is going to be thrown at us over the next couple of months.
