RECALLS, RECALLS EVERYWHERE

Another busy month for Oregon Governor Kate Brown. Let’s start with the good news: Governor Brown signed sweeping legislation that brought on long-sought reforms to the juvenile justice system. She also signed legislation overhauling the state’s hate crime laws to include gender identity as a protected class.

Now the bad news: after dramatically fleeing the state, and in some cases, threatening violence, extreme members of the Oregon State Legislature are now threatening to recall Governor Brown. Her crime? Offering to use her executive powers to pass a sweeping climate change bill and other reforms. More as this situation develops.

Colorado Governor Jared Polis is also under threat – with a conservative organization in the state filing a recall petition after he signed legislation impacting gun control, voting laws and oil and the gas industry. But despite opposition and petitions, the Governor is still hard at work.

(PRO-EQUALITY) PARTY IN THE U.S.A.

Oregon isn’t the only state to reexamine hate crime legislation this year. New York State and Connecticut are updating their outdated laws as well.

BALDWIN V. BANKS: U.S. Senator Tammy Baldwin introduced legislation to regulate the private equity industry.

In her first speech on the Senate floor, U.S. Senator Kyrsten Sinema encouraged improved mental health services for veterans with PTSD.

Despite a much-heralded Infrastructure Week (and then another… and another), legislation around improving roads and bridges failed to arrive. U.S. Congresswoman Sharice Davids is taking matters into her own hands.

U.S. Congressman Chris Pappas took to the House floor to demand a solution for rising drug prices. Watch the full video here.

California State Assemblymember Todd Gloria introduced Assembly Bill 493, which would require California schools to provide annual teacher and staff training on how to support LGBTQ students.

Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway celebrated Pride Month in style, raising the Pride flag outside both the City-County and Municipal buildings.

Speaking of first time lesbian Mayors – Mayor Rhodes-Conway, Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot and Tampa Mayor Jane Castor connected at the Bloomberg Leadership Initiative!
