Highland
II Reservoir Project Tour*

I had the opportunity to tour the
Highland II Reservoir's liner and cover replacement project - the
biggest project of its type underway in the U.S. right now. I was
proud to join my colleagues in supporting a PENNVEST loan to the
Pittsburgh Water & Sewer Authority [link 2] for further rehabilitation
projections on the Highland II Reservoir. Investing in the water
infrastructure of this region is a huge priority for me. Ensuring that
we have clean, safe drinking water without imposing rate hikes is
absolutely crucial, especially as inflation and rising utility costs
impact working families.

*Etna
Community Day*

We had a wonderful time at Etna [link 5]'s Community
Day on Saturday, August 6th! We shared a table with Representative
Sara Innamorato [link 6] and Etna Councilwoman and Senator Williams'
staffer, Jessica Semler. We had a great time seeing everyone enjoying
the free swimming pool, games, conversations with organizations like
the Etna Garden Club [link 7] and the Boy Scouts of America, Laurel
Highlands Council [link 8], exploring emergency vehicles, getting a
picture with the Etna Police and Fire Department mascot Jax, and fun
raffles and bingo. Thanks for coming out to celebrate your community
and for stopping by our tent to talk!

*Onala
Recovery Center Overdose Response Training *

Representative Sara
Innamorato [link 9] and I were honored to host an Onala Recovery
Center [link 10] Overdose Response Training at Roots of Faith [link
11] on Saturday, August 6th afternoon in Sharpsburg [link 12].
Attendees received life-saving training and education about using
Narcan and eliminating the stigma around addiction. Judge Matt
Rudzicki spoke about diversionary programs that help people with
substance use disorder and keep them out of jail. Thank you to Roots
of Faith, Onala Recovery Center, and everyone who showed up for this
valuable training!

*Small
Business Resource Fair*

Thank you to the Union Project [link 13],
located at the nexus of the Highland Park, Morningside, and East
Liberty neighborhoods, for providing the perfect location for our
first Small Business Fair! Participants had a wide variety of resource
organizations to connect with, including Honeycomb Credit [link 14],
Innovation Works Inc. [link 15], Bridgeway Capital Inc [link 16]., and
the University of Pittsburgh Small Business Development Center [link
17]. Everyone who attended the event said they found new information
on a variety of business challenges.

We know small businesses are
the engine of local economies and supporting them is one of our
highest priorities! We will hold another event next year, so if you
are a small business owner or know someone who is, please send us your
ideas for what small businesses need by calling us at 412-364-0469
(Ross) or 724-224-2131 (Harrison) or
emailing
[email protected] [link 18].

and seeing all of the community organizations, the fun activities for
kids, yummy food trucks, and live bands. It was wonderful to join the
neighborhood in supporting their emergency responders and celebrating
this unique community!

*Sheet
Metal Apprentices Upgrade Ross Baseball Facilities *

Thank you to
Sheet Metal Workers Local 12 [link 20] apprentices who just finished
upgrading the Ross Township [link 21] Scharmyn Park [link 22]
concession stand and dugouts for West View Ross Athletic Association
[link 23]! The project was made possible by a metal siding and roof
panel donation from ATAS International Inc [link 24]. The apprentices
installed new metal trims, vertical siding panels that covered the old
wood siding, and corrugated metal ceilings and reroofed three of the
dugouts. The project gave the apprentices hands-on training and
exposure to real-world obstacles they're likely to encounter on future
job sites.

Back in 2019 I was pleased to support a $500,000
Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program (RACP) capital improvement
grant that was awarded to the Sheet Metal Workers Local 12 union hall
and training facility in Harmar Township. It is great to see Local
12's apprentices getting practical experience in the field and
contributing to our local communities!
