Dear Friend,
I hope you find joy during this festive season, particularly with your furry,
feathered, or finned friends and family members. Thanks to your kind support,
PETA has rescued countless animals from abusive situations this year, including
beautiful Maggie featured here, whom we saved just in the nick of time.
A PETA eyewitness documenting cruelty in Alaska's dogsledding industry found
Maggie and dozens of other dogs chained to dilapidated boxes and plastic barrels
in an Iditarod musher's "dog yard." They were being fed moldy meat and were left
outdoors without bedding, even though the wind chill had plummeted to a frigid
19 degrees below zero.
Maggie was painfully thin and couldn't even bark, something that happens when a
dog has barked continuously, which she did—begging for release—as she paced in
circles, pulling constantly on the short chain that held her in place.
She desperately needed assistance, and you helped us provide it—and rescue her.
Because her captors had decided that she was "not built to race," PETA's
eyewitness worked to secure Maggie's release and got her out of there. Your
compassion allowed us to send her on a 2,700-mile cross-country journey, during
which she slept in motel beds, rolled in the grass, ate well, and was showered
with the love and affection that she'd never known. At the end of her adventure,
she continued her recovery at the Sam Simon Center—our headquarters in Norfolk,
Virginia—before being adopted by a devoted couple who is giving her the life
that she's always deserved.
Because of you, Maggie will spend this holiday season in a warm house filled with
the holiday spirit.
My wish is that all the animals freezing outside will be brought indoors to feel
the warmth of a loving family. But until that day comes, PETA will keep rescuing
and helping them in every way we can.
With kind regards and best wishes for the season from all of us at PETA,
Ingrid E. Newkirk
President
P.S. Knowing that Maggie will spend the season warm, fed, and loved is a holiday
gift indeed. But millions more animals are in trouble all over the world, and we
can't forget about them. Please consider opening your heart even further to animals
like Maggie this holiday season by making a special year-end gift.
