The fact is I sometimes feel nowadays like the character in Shelley’s poem ‘Ozymandias’ who is a “traveler from an antique land.” The antique land I come from is the America of the early 1960’s where I grew up. That was a good place. We were rightfully proud of both our political greatness and our moral goodness. No matter what they tell you, we were also very aware of our failings, but we were confident that our traditions would make us better, and that those good traditions were worth teaching to our children and the world.
