Incredible news for our community this week, John.
You probably know that our coast near the US-Mexico border face severe pollution from raw sewage runoff from Tijuana. It has led to beach closures, and it’s an issue that environmentalists and business leaders have been trying to fix for decades.
I'm proud to announce that the United States–Mexico–Canada Agreement (USMCA) -- which was agreed upon by Democrats and Republicans just this week -- will include a $300 million appropriation for the Border Water Infrastructure Program, which will help address sewage cleanup in the Tijuana River Valley. This appropriation mirrors legislation that I introduced earlier this year in the Border Water Infrastructure Improvement Act.
I can’t stress just how huge a win this is for our community.
At a time when gridlock in Congress is at an all-time high, we’ve secured millions in federal dollars for San Diego County to clean up our oceans, address the ecological challenges posed by pollution, and improve our local economy. That should make everyone proud.
