** Why alumni love this program
------------------------------------------------------------
🎧 Hear Poynter alumni answer questions about the women's leadership academy in our Q&A ([link removed]) , hosted on Aug. 11 via Twitter Spaces. Here's an excerpt:
Veronica Toney, Director Digital Content Development, PBS KIDS, 2017 alum: At the time I did WLA, I was a digital editor at The Washington Post. I think my favorite part was having conversations with others working in the digital space. I think all of us in many different news orgs feel like we do a lot of explaining of what we're talking about. It was just nice to speak the same language and move the conversation forward.
Corinne Chin, Director, News Talent, the Associated Press, 2018 alum: Poynter was the first time I was in a group of people from other news organizations in such a safe space where we could speak freely, and we could know that there was a circle of trust in the room.
Echoing Veronica, for the first time I felt like I wasn't alone in a lot of the diversity, equity and inclusion challenges that I had been facing in my organization — and this was 2018, so prior to 2020, it wasn't being talked about as openly — and I still have these conversations with these women to this day. So, definitely, the cohort is real! It's something that I talked about with the people that I went through the program with back in that spring, but also something that we talk about in our Slack channel and the groups that we have across cohorts. To have the support network and have this personal board of directors was so valuable.
Samantha Ragland, current academy director, 2016 alum: I am still surprised at how often I talk to my cohort from 2016. And I know it sounds corny, but I was not around a lot of women either. I was in a good ol’ boys shop — that I loved! But it was incredible to be around a group of women and to know that there was the support there. If you have ever felt, or are currently feeling, alone and on an island even when you are in the midst of a newsroom of lots of people, I have to say that the academy is a great place to start to bring people over to your island.
Sarah Menendez, Head of Operations, City Cast, 2022 alum: The cohort conversations are so real — and so ongoing. I think my favorite part was feeling like I was actively problem solving while I was there. Going into Poynter, I thought that I was just going to be a student and be learning and taking things in and then coming back and starting to apply some of those things to my work. I was so surprised at how it felt like at our table we were helping somebody work through an issue or helping empower someone to make a change. It just felt so active. It didn't feel like I was waiting to go back to my work to do the work. I was there doing the work.
