When I ran for president three years ago, it was with a nearly singular focus on climate change as the critical issue of our time.

Now, as I closely monitor the climate-driven wildfires raging in Eastern Washington, I am glad to see Congress taking much-needed action on climate change by passing the Inflation Reduction Act into law.

I truly believe that, without our campaign then, our campaign today, and activists across the country -- especially young people -- highlighting this existential issue, we would have much less to celebrate today. We got this done, together. Yet, our state and the country still burns. We can't afford to slow down -- not even a bit.

Unfortunately, these climate disasters are not unique to Washington state. As a recent New York Times headline reads, "It's Been a 'Summer of Disasters,' and It's Only Half Over."

But even as our country and our world literally swelter under recording-breaking temperatures, not a single Republican voted for the Inflation Reduction Act's passage. Apparently, our country is only as green as our majority is blue.

So, as crucial as this was for the climate movement, it also highlights just how important it is that we continue to support Democratic leadership -- both on a national scale and here in my home state of Washington.
