It was Thursday, May 26th, two days after the tragic Uvalde shooting, and I was dropping off my sons at school. The car ride had been unusually quiet.
When we got close to school, a voice popped up from the back of the car. The voice of a child you can tell had been really thinking about something.
"Mommy, if the shooter comes to my room, should I hide in the bathroom, or should I try to climb out the window like the girl in Texas did?"
The question shook me to my core. My 8 year old son wasn't thinking about what game he would play with his friends at recess, or what he would learn in English class. He was thinking about how he would react to a mass shooting.
I'm running for Congress because we are traumatizing a generation in real time. I refuse to let my three sons grow up in a world where active shooter drills happen more often than soccer practice.
That is why I am so proud to have the Moms Demand Action Gun Candidate Distinction, and why I will advocate for an assault weapons ban on day one in Congress.
This is beyond politics. Lives are at stake, and I will not sit on the sidelines.
My election is in just 8 days, and my Republican opponent in the fall will be funded in large part by the NRA.
He doesn't want to face me. Because he knows that I will not back down.
