News from Representative Larson

Dear Friends,

Yesterday marked 87 years of Social Security. In August of 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Social Security Act into law, ensuring access to lifesaving resources that impact more than 65 million Americans every year. This program helps protect our nation’s most vulnerable and provides beneficiaries a lifeline that empowers them to live a life of dignity and purchase their necessities, from groceries to prescription drugs.

There are over 146,000 residents in Connecticut’s First District that receive Social Security benefits every year. We must ensure these benefits keep up with the needs of Americans on Social Security. Congress has not enhanced this program in 50 years! As our nation combats the COVID pandemic and addresses rising prices, it is imperative we enhance and protect the program American workers pay into with each and every paycheck. Now is the time to pass my bill, Social Security 2100: A Sacred Trust!

Social Security beneficiaries are our brothers and sisters, our mothers and fathers, and our children. It’s time to ensure they have the tools they need in order to not only survive but thrive both today and for years to come. Social Security 2100: A Sacred Trust would provide an increase in benefits for all beneficiaries, end the 5-month waiting period to receive disability benefits, provide caregiver credits, and improve the annual Cost-of-Living Adjustment so benefits keep pace with inflation.

A lot has changed in our country in 87 years, but the reliability of Social Security has not. A majority of Americans support protecting and enhancing Social Security, and it’s time to act on the will of the people and make a meaningful investment in America’s most comprehensive insurance program. I will keep fighting in Washington to ensure this program serves our nation for decades to come.
