Date: Friday, December 13, 2019To: Friends & SupportersFrom: Gary L. Bauer, Director Defending Jewish StudentsAs you know, President Trump signed an executive order this week instructing the federal government to take serious steps to root out anti-Semitism on America's college campuses. Unfortunately, the order has been the subject of a lot of misinformed criticism and confusion. In an effort to provide some clarity, Jared Kushner, the president's son-in-law, published an opinion piece in the New York Times ( [link removed](?x-mi:(?%3C=href=)[%5Cs]*[ ) this week. Below are some excerpts of Kushner's column."As the poison of anti-Semitism spreads with dangerous violence throughout Europe, the Middle East, and even here at home — most recently in a horrific attack on Tuesday in Jersey City — President Trump is taking meaningful action to crush this evil. . . As a grandchild of Holocaust survivors, I understand the horrors of anti-Semitism. I could not be more proud of President Trump's new policy. . . "With Wednesday's executive order, the president takes crucial action to support and defend Jewish students in the United States. For the first time, a president is making clear that Title VI of the Civil Rights Act's prohibition against discrimination based on race, color or national origin covers discrimination against Jews. . ."The executive order does not define Jews as a nationality. It merely says that to the extent that Jews are discriminated against for ethnic, racial or national characteristics, they are entitled to protection by the anti-discrimination law."This new order adopts as its definition of anti-Semitism the language put forth in 2016 by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance, while also accounting for other forms of anti-Semitism. . . "The Remembrance Alliance definition makes clear what our administration has stated publicly and on the record: Anti-Zionism is anti-Semitism. The inclusion of this language with contemporary examples gives critical guidance to agencies enforcing Title VI provisions. . . "It has become fashionable among Jew haters to characterize any discriminatory behavior — no matter how loathsome — not as criticism of Jews, but of Israel. This is a lie. Especially on college campuses, where discrimination, harassment and intimidation of Jewish students has become commonplace and is routinely, but wrongly, justified."This administration's commitment to open debate and the pursuit of truth on our nation's campuses is unwavering. . . But we will stand firmly against using taxpayer resources to entrench and subsidize invidious discrimination."Britain Rejects Anti-SemitismLast night, British voters defied the polls and gave Boris Johnson the biggest Conservative Party majority since Margaret Thatcher. Some areas that had voted for the left-wing Labour Party since the 1930s swung to the Conservatives, who now control 365 seats in Parliament to 203 for Labour.Israel's leaders celebrated ( [link removed](?x-mi:(?%3C=href=)[%5Cs]*[ ) last night's results because Labour Party Leader Jeremy Corbyn was no friend of Israel. Corbyn and his party have been dogged by anti-Semitism scandals for years. Several members of the Labour Party resigned ( [link removed](?x-mi:(?%3C=href=)[%5Cs]*[ ) earlier this year in protest. Former Prime Minister Tony Blair ( [link removed](?x-mi:(?%3C=href=)[%5Cs]*[ ) and others have repeatedly warned against rising anti-Semitism in the Labour Party, and for good reason.Corbyn once referred to Hamas and Hezbollah as "friends ( [link removed](?x-mi:(?%3C=href=)[%5Cs]*[ )." He has also attended conferences with known terrorists ( [link removed](?x-mi:(?%3C=href=)[%5Cs]*[ ), and even attended a wreath-laying ceremony ( [link removed](?x-mi:(?%3C=href=)[%5Cs]*[ ) for Palestinian terrorists. Under Corbyn's leadership, the British government launched a hate crimes investigation ( [link removed](?x-mi:(?%3C=href=)[%5Cs]*[ ) of the Labour Party over dozens of alleged anti-Semitic crimes. Corbyn once even tried to downplay the significance ( [link removed](?x-mi:(?%3C=href=)[%5Cs]*[ ) of the Holocaust. Last night's results were not just a win for Brexit, they were also a resounding rejection of anti-Semitism.Christians United for Israel UK also hailed last night's results. In a statement ( [link removed](?x-mi:(?%3C=href=)[%5Cs]*[ ), CUFI declared:"We will be praying for the Prime Minister as he leads the country through this pivotal period in our history and for all elected Members of Parliament. Our nation is at a crucial crossroads and we believe CUFI has an important role in the weeks and months ahead. . . "As Christians we shared the same concerns as those of the Jewish community that feared waking up today to the news of a new [prime minister] who is fervently anti-Israel. . . We are under no illusion that the problem of anti-Semitism has disappeared overnight – anti-Semitism remains in the Labour party and must be rooted out. "And we must continue to fight against the evil of anti-Semitism with all our might, whether it be from the far left, far right or by Islamic extremism such as that experienced daily by Israel."Christians United for Israel Action Fund is a 501(c)(4) non-profit organization, donations are not tax deductible for federal income tax purposes.
