Team,
When I’m out on the road, there’s one issue that unites people almost more than any other: lowering the cost of prescription drugs. It’s something I’ve been working on since I was first elected to Congress, and comes from my personal experience caring for my mom when she had ovarian cancer. And it’s reinforced to me every week when someone tells me that they pay more in drug costs per month than their mortgage.
Now, one big piece of that puzzle has been passed into law: allowing Medicare to negotiate the cost of prescription drugs. This very basic idea — that when Medicare buys in bulk it should get a lower per unit price – is in the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) that just passed. The IRA strikes the single sentence, currently in law, that prohibits the country’s biggest insurance health program to use their buying power to get lower prices. In contrast, the military insurance I'm on is allowed to negotiate — but it’s one fifth the size of Medicare.
And – you guessed it – Big Pharma, made up of some of the world's largest pharmaceutical companies, isn’t exactly a fan of this legislation. In fact, my House colleagues and I received a letter threatening anyone who votes in favor of it. To be honest, the pressure is much worse on some of my peers: I don’t take corporate PAC money, so the Pharma industry's threat of pulling all support doesn’t impact me the way those threats are currently chafing others.
In the past, we’ve seen the pharmaceutical industry prop up candidates who support their agenda – and spend huge sums against anyone who tries to stand in their way. So, don’t be surprised if you see some intense spending against me and my colleagues in the coming weeks.
These prescription drug reforms are basic, common sense measures that any American can understand. And it’s about doing the right thing for our seniors who are paying way too much for their life saving drugs. So keep your eyes peeled for the cost of drugs to come down over the next few years!
