GLAAD responds to White House appointment of Monkeypox virus (MPV) national response coordinators
GLAAD recently responded to the White House appointments of Robert Fenton as National Monkeypox Response Coordinator and Dr. Demetre Daskalakis as Deputy Coordinator.
The White House announcement says Fenton and Daskalakis will lead strategy and operations to combat the current MPV outbreak, “including equitably increasing the availability of tests, vaccinations and treatments.”
GLAAD President and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis responded in a statement: “The White House appointments today reflect the seriousness of the MPV outbreak…we must get more vaccines to vulnerable people, especially sexually active gay and bi men, and accelerate all efforts to inform the public to track, test, treat and contain this virus as quickly as possible. Bob Fenton’s experience shows this can be done. Dr. Demetre Daskalakis is a longtime LGBTQ and HIV health advocate whose work will be critical to ensure the federal government responds to the needs of the medical community and the LGBTQ community in equitable ways.” Read the full statement here.

YouTube de-monetizes anti-trans videos from Jordan Peterson; GLAAD still pushing for more action from the platform
After right wing pundit Jordan Peterson spewed horrible anti-trans hate, including targeting actor Elliot Page with repeated malicious misgendering and deadnaming, YouTube announced this week that two of those videos would be de-monetized.
GLAAD responded to the news: “In de-monetizing these two videos, YouTube is confirming that Jordan Peterson’s hate-driven anti-trans rhetoric is in violation of the platform’s community guidelines. However, in only de-monetizing rather than removing the videos YouTube is failing to truly enforce its own Hate speech policy which asserts: ‘We remove content promoting violence or hatred against individuals or groups based on … gender identity and expression.’ It is shameful that these videos remain active, with millions of views, continuing to perpetuate hateful and false narratives at the expense of trans people everywhere.” GLAAD is working behind-the-scenes with platforms including YouTube to advocate for more action on anti-LGBTQ hate on the platforms.
Ina Fried at Axios broke the story this week with subsequent coverage from the Advocate, Them, LGBTQ Nation, PinkNews and others.
