John,
The Department of Justice needs to launch a broad investigation into missing texts and other records from January 6, 2021.
In recent weeks, we’ve learned of missing records from the Secret Service, the Department of Defense and the Department of Homeland Security.
That’s why last week we filed a complaint calling on the DOJ to immediately launch a broad-based investigation into deleted January 6th records. This is clearly not just a problem at one agency or office—it appears that multiple federal agencies deleted texts and records of top government officials, including Trump’s acting Homeland Security and Defense Secretaries.
There’s no excuse for this kind of negligence, if indeed it was only negligence, with crucial federal records that could help illuminate one of the darkest days for our democracy. The DOJ must immediately launch a broad inquiry, determine whether any records can be recovered and hold accountable those who allowed records to be destroyed.
CREW has been sounding the alarm about widespread recordkeeping issues in the Trump administration for years. Last week brought this issue to a new fever pitch, but it’s made clear what we’ve known all along: recordkeeping matters. We’re going to keep fighting every day for answers and accountability.
Thank you,
The CREW Team
