In this workshop, Karen Davis, PhD presents an overview of chicken exploitation and reviews the unfortunate history of how chickens came to be used for food, feathers, and more. Karen discusses our modern world of avian influenza, food poisoning, global warming and genetic engineering. She explores how the expansion of poultry production and consumption is cruel, sickening, and environmentally destructive and offers a compelling argument for adopting a compassionate, plant-based, animal-free diet as an alternative to the warfare waged on defenseless chickens.

KAREN DAVIS, PhD is the President and Founder of United Poultry Concerns, a nonprofit organization that promotes the compassionate and respectful treatment of domestic fowl including a sanctuary for chickens in Virginia. Inducted into the National Animal Rights Hall of Fame for Outstanding Contributions to Animal Liberation, Karen is the author of numerous books, essays, articles and campaigns. Her books include A Home for Henny; Instead of Chicken, Instead of Turkey: A Poultryless ‘Poultry’ Potpourri; Prisoned Chickens, Poisoned Eggs: An Inside Look at the Modern Poultry Industry; More Than a Meal: The Turkey in History, Myth, Ritual, and Reality; and The Holocaust and the Henmaid’s Tale: A Case for Comparing Atrocities.
