Friend, it's been one year since the major political upheaval in Afghanistan. And though the world's attention has waned, the Afghan people continue to struggle with widespread unemployment, a deepening malnutrition crisis, and a deteriorating, under-resourced public health care system.
Then, two months ago, a deadly 5.9-magnitude earthquake devastated the eastern Afghan provinces of Khost and Paktika. This has been a crisis on top of a crisis.
Amidst all the change Afghanistan has undergone this year alone, Doctors without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) has continued our lifesaving operations because we do not turn our backs on those who need aid. And with the need so high, we urgently need your help in responding to this crisis and others happening across the globe.
As an MSF gynecologist, I understand how bleak maternal health outcomes in Afghanistan can be. I’ve treated mothers who lack access to prenatal care and have lost their babies in the womb; I’ve seen others bravely deliver their children without pain medication. Our work in Afghanistan is a lifeline, and support from our dedicated community helped us assist more than 3,600 births in May.
MSF runs five projects in five different Afghan provinces: Helmand, Herat, Kandahar, Khost, and Kunduz. We are dedicated to providing care and assistance wherever it’s needed.
