NEW INVESTIGATION RELEASED
LCA/ALW EXPOSES S. KOREA'S MORAN MARKET
"THE MECCA OF DOG MEAT"
Dear John,
LCA and ALW (S.Korea sister organization, Animal Liberation Wave) conducted a five-month undercover investigation, from February - June 2022, into S. Korea’s Moran Market, known as "The Mecca of Dog Meat".
What was revealed is a nationwide system of dog trafficking that works behind the scenes to help supply dog meat carcasses to the Moran Market, located in Seognam city, near Seoul.
Investigators witnessed the existence of "middle merchants" who travel by truck across S. Korea buying pet dogs from households, churches, and factories to be sold at auction houses, then secretly electrocuted to death in nearby slaughterhouses. The meat from these slaughtered dogs is sold by vendors located in Moran Market. LCA and ALW confirmed there are 10 vendors that sell dog meat or "Bosingtang", dog meat soup, in the Market.
LCA and ALW are also releasing the news of this investigation in S. Korea today at our Boknal protest in front of the Moran Market. Boknal is Korea's annual tradition of consuming dog meat soup to combat the hottest days of summer.
This investigation followed our 2021 eight-month investigation that resulted in two dog meat slaughterhouses being shut down and fines levied against an auction house. However, facilities involved in the dog meat industry can continue operating because their annual revenue far exceeds the legal fines they are charged when caught violating the law. Learn more here.
LCA and ALW has created a petition to urge the Mayor of Seognam to permanently end the sale of dog meat at the Moran Market. Please click here to sign!
