Five U.S. Lawmakers Visit Taiwan, Just 12 Days After Pelosi Visits

Associated Press: A delegation of American lawmakers arrived in Taiwan on Sunday, just 12 days after a visit by U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi that prompted China to launch days of threatening military drills around the self-governing island that Beijing says must come under its control. The five-member delegation, led by Democratic Sen. Ed Markey of Massachusetts, will meet President Tsai Ing-wen and other officials, as well as members of the private sector, to discuss shared interests including reducing tensions in the Taiwan Strait and investments in semiconductors (Associated Press). Daily Wire: The visit came following Markey’s visit to South Korea to reaffirm the U.S.-South Korean Alliance. Markey met with South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol and other national leaders earlier Sunday in South Korea before arriving in Taiwan on a separate flight to join the other U.S. lawmakers (Daily Wire).

Democrat Inflation Bill Funds Abortion, Violating Hyde Amendment

National Review: The new reconciliation bill that Senate Democrats just passed — under the almost unbelievable title of the “Inflation Reduction Act of 2022” — will have plenty of ill effects, including that it will extend Obamacare’s premium tax credits for health-care plans that cover elective abortion. The bill extends the credits through 2025 at a cost of an estimated $64 billion, unless they’re made permanent in the future — a further extension of what was done under the American Rescue Plan. In short, the bill will continue subsidies for health-insurance plans on the Obamacare exchanges that fund abortion on demand, in violation of the Hyde amendment (National Review). Life News: Measures like the Hyde Amendment that prohibit taxpayer funding for abortions had strong, bipartisan support in Congress for decades. Since 1976, the Hyde Amendment alone has saved an estimated 2.4 million babies’ lives, including about 60,000 each year. Within the past five years, however, Democrat leaders have shifted to a more extreme pro-abortion position that includes forcing American taxpayers to pay for the killing of unborn babies in abortions (Life News).

Idaho Supreme Court Votes in Favor of Total Abortion Ban

Daily Wire: In a 3-2 decision Friday, the Idaho Supreme Court allowed the state’s total abortion ban to take effect, as well as a Texas-style “heartbeat” law that allows relatives of an unborn child to sue abortion providers for up to $20,000 — while legal challenges to both laws are ongoing. In the ruling, written by Justice Robyn Brody, the court found that the Supreme Court’s ruling in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization “altered the landscape” of abortion law in the United States, thus allowing the bans to be enforced. The abortion ban will go into effect on August 25; the heartbeat bill went into effect immediately after the ruling was delivered (Daily Wire). New York Post: The state Supreme Court’s ruling means potential relatives of an embryo or fetus can now sue abortion providers over procedures done after six weeks of gestation and another stricter ban criminalizing all abortions can take effect later this month. Potential relatives can sue for up to $20,000 within four years of an abortion. Rapists cannot sue under the law but a rapist’s family members would be able to sue (New York Post).

Arizona Begins Constructing Wall on US-Mexico Border Without Biden’s Permission

Washington Examiner: The state of Arizona will not wait for the Biden administration to build a border wall on the U.S.-Mexico boundary and instead has chosen to go it alone, erecting its own state-funded barrier to stop an unprecedented flow of illegal immigrants. Gov. Doug Ducey‘s top advisers announced in a call with reporters Friday morning that construction began “six minutes ago” on a portion of the Yuma, Arizona, border where gaps of land between Trump-era wall projects exist as a result of President Joe Biden’s January 2021 order to stop building the barrier. The state made a sudden decision this week to finish the border wall and said it had not informed the Department of Homeland Security or the White House of its decision to build. The White House and DHS did not return requests for comment (Washington Examiner). Governor Ducey: “We can’t wait any longer. The Biden administration’s lack of urgency on border security is a dereliction of duty… Arizonans can’t wait any longer for the federal government to deliver on their delayed promises” (az.gov).

Rand Paul Looks to Abolish Espionage Act: “It is long past time to repeal this egregious affront to the 1st Amendment”

Insider: Republican Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky called for the repeal of the Espionage Act after it was revealed that the Justice Department is investigating if former President Donald Trump potentially violated the Act (Insider). Rand Paul: The espionage act was abused from the beginning to jail dissenters of WWI. It is long past time to repeal this egregious affront to the 1st Amendment. Repeal the Espionage Act – The Future of Freedom Foundation (Twitter). Townhall: The Espionage Act has been used to prosecute infamous spies in the U.S. including Robert Hanssen and the criminal indictment of Julian Assange. It has received countless disapproval that many claim that it is nearly impossible to create a defense against charges under the Espionage Act (Townhall).

Trump Lawyers Request FBI Return Any Files Covered by Attorney-Client Privilege

Fox News: The FBI seized boxes containing records covered by attorney-client privilege and potentially executive privilege during its raid of former President Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home, sources familiar with the investigation told Fox News, adding that the Justice Department opposed Trump lawyers’ request for the appointment of an independent, special master to review the records… The FBI seized classified records from Trump’s Palm Beach home during its unprecedented Monday morning raid, including some marked as top secret. But the former president is disputing the classification, saying the records have been declassified (Fox News). Daily Mail: Donald Trump demanded that the FBI return to him any attorney-client material they seized from Mar-a-Lago during the raid on Monday. ‘Oh great! It has just been learned that the FBI, in its now famous raid of Mar-a-Lago, took boxes of privileged ‘attorney-client’ material, and also ‘executive’ privileged material, which they knowingly should not have taken,’ the former president lamented on Truth Social (Daily Mail).

White House Sought to Silence Critic on Twitter

No matter which side you fall on, this is pretty scary. Fox News: Substack writer Alex Berenson shared internal communications from Twitter that revealed the White House inquired about why his account had not been banned, according to findings from his lawsuit with the tech giant. Berenson announced last month that he and Twitter reached a “mutually acceptable resolution” that prompted his Twitter account to be reinstated. After previously hinting that the Biden administration may have played a role in his deplatforming from Twitter, Berenson published screenshots of an April 2021 exchange between Twitter employees regarding a meeting it had with White House officials (Fox News). Wall Street Journal: Mr. Berenson has been a vocal critic of government lockdowns, mask mandates and mRNA vaccines. Mr. Berenson sued the company for, among other things, removing him in violation of its own stated policies. In settling the lawsuit last month, Twitter acknowledged it erred in banning Mr. Berenson and agreed to restore his account (Wall Street Journal).

As Afghanistan Withdraw Anniversary Approaches, Biden’s Evacuation is Critiqued

Fox News: Rep. Michael McCaul, R-Texas, and Rep. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., both expressed dissatisfaction on Sunday with the unfolding of the chaotic military withdrawal from Afghanistan nearly one year ago that led to the death of 13 U.S. service members. The bipartisan pair of congressmen reflected on the approaching one-year anniversary of the Afghanistan withdrawal during an appearance on CBS News’ “Face the Nation,” saying the Biden administration should have handled things differently (Fox News). RNC Research: Approaching its one-year anniversary, even Democrat Adam Schiff concedes Biden completely botched the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan (Twitter). Washington Examiner: President Joe Biden has been accused in a report by House Republicans of knowingly misleading the country about the justification for the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan in his April 2021 speech (Washington Examiner).

Salman Rushdie off Ventilator, Still Battles Various Injuries

CNN: The man suspected of stabbing renowned author Salman Rushdie in western New York pleaded not guilty Saturday to attempted murder in the second degree and other charges, his attorney says (CNN). National Review: Salman Rushdie is just off a ventilator, likely to lose an eye, body pierced, and still struggling with serious injuries. His alleged assailant is reportedly “sympathetic to the Iranian government” and to “Shia extremism more broadly” (National Review). Federalist: “The Satanic Verses” was published back in September 1988. And because of the book’s purportedly impertinent treatment of the prophet Muhammad, it was banned in Rushdie’s native India and dozens of other nations—including virtually every Muslim-majority country in the world (Federalist).

WHO Moves to Change Name of Monkeypox to Avoid Being Racist

International Business Times: The World Health Organization (WHO) is planning to change the name of the monkeypox disease amid concerns of racist and derogatory connotations. On Friday, WHO announced it has already renamed two clades of the virus with Roman numerals after initially naming them after the geographic regions where they commonly circulate. A group of global experts convened by WHO agreed on the new names as well as how the virus clades should be classified and recorded based on genome sequence repository sites (International Business Times). HotAir: Monkeypox has been around since 1958. The world’s population has managed to live with that name since then. It was a commonsense name at the time – research monkeys in Denmark were observed to have a pox-like disease (HotAir). ABC: To date, there have been more than 31,000 cases of monkeypox identified globally since May, with the majority of those beyond Africa. Monkeypox has been endemic in parts of central and west Africa for decades and was not known to trigger large outbreaks beyond the continent until May. WHO declared the global spread of monkeypox to be an international emergency in July and the U.S. declared its own epidemic to be a national emergency earlier this month (ABC).
