** Is Measles Eradication Through Vaccination a Realistic Goal?

When the U.S. launched measles vaccination in the 1960s, facilitated by generous federal funding, there were experts who questioned the need for a vaccine, given the low and falling measles morbidity rate and the greater than 98% decline in mortality since 1900.
Today, 50 years since the introduction and widespread use of measles vaccination, we continue to see outbreaks of measles which demand that we question those efforts. Our public health agencies often point a finger at those who are vaccine hesitant or “anti-vaxxers”, typically parents of children who had significant adverse events following vaccination, as being responsible for outbreaks of measles. Such finger-pointing responses are overly simplistic and do not acknowledge the body of accumulating science that question the effectiveness and safety of the measles vaccine.

** Spectrum News 1: Vaccine Safety—Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. vs. Dr. Robert Riewerts

On December 8, Spectrum News 1 in Los Angeles, CA, aired a segment called: “Safe-Vaccine Advocate Wants More Testing While Pediatrician Says It Is Safe” (with Robert Kennedy Jr., Chairman, Children’s Health Defense and Dr. Robert Riewerts, Chief of Pediatrics, Kaiser Permanente, Southern California).
Mr. Kennedy discussed the chronic disease epidemic among the “vaccine generation,” those born 1988-89 and after. He suggested that, because of the lack of safety studies on vaccines, we may be trading mild self-limiting diseases with chronic disease. RFK, Jr.: “I don’t think we should be coercing American citizens to take a pharmaceutical product that is untested, that has zero liability; and depriving them of their right to education if they do not take it, even though we don’t have the tests that show it is beneficial as a whole.”

** New Jersey Bills S2173 and A3818 “Exemptions from Mandatory Immunizations”

On Thursday, Dec. 12, the NJ Senate Health Committee held a hearing on bill S2173 ([link removed]) that will repeal the religious exemption to vaccination. The bill passed out of the 10-member committee with a vote of 6 to 4. It will be voted on in the Senate on Monday, Dec. 16th and is expected to pass. If it passes, it will take effect in six months and eliminate all non-medical exemptions. NJ residents who can be there as witnesses on Monday are strongly encouraged to come.
