Social Security is the most successful anti-poverty program in the history of the United States.
But Republican politicians keep trying to gut or privatize Social Security. They've even mentioned it in their 2022 campaigns. Arizona Republican hopeful Blake Masters, whose campaign has been bankrolled by extremist billionaire Peter Thiel, stated openly "maybe we should privatize Social Security."
We must not sacrifice our future for Wall Street profits and billionaires' tax breaks. We need to fight back now.
Today, on the 87th birthday of Social Security, we're taking action to save it. Tell Republicans in Congress to strengthen -- not cut -- Social Security.
Social Security has saved millions of seniors and families from poverty. It represents a promise to every generation that we'll make sure they have a basic level of security in old age, or if they become disabled, or lose a parent or spouse.
But Republican Senator Ron Johnson believes it should require congressional reauthorization EVERY YEAR -- one step further than Rick Scott's plan to every five years. Others have suggested debating Social Security behind closed doors. And year after year, Republicans have threatened to divert billions of dollars from the program in one budget after another.
We need to keep our promise to generations of Americans by strengthening Social Security now. And we can, by making modest changes like ensuring that every American pays their fair share.
