EYE ON THE NEWS

The 75th anniversary of Korematsu v. United States is coming up Dec. 18. To mark the date and honor Fred T. Korematsu, we will be having a joint fundraiser with the Korematsu Institute. Stay tuned.

The New Way Forward bill was introduced Dec. 10. Asian Americans Advancing Justice and Southeast Asia Resource Action Center (SEARAC) support the legislation, as it would restore due process protections for all immigrants, including immigrants in deportation proceedings.

We must do more to honor our Filipino World War II Veterans who fought under the American flag and sacrificed so much. General Tony Taguba shared his perspective on why USCIS must not end the Filipino WWII Veterans Parole Program. Sign the petition by Dec. 18 to tell USCIS to preserve this program.

Federal Court Bars DHS From Implementing Unlawful Changes to Fees for Citizenship
We joined other groups to file a lawsuit against the Trump Administration for making it harder for low-income immigrants to get the U.S. citizenship fee waived. This week, a district court issued a nationwide preliminary injunction barring USCIS from implementing such changes. But the fight isn't over. You can help by submitting a comment to take action. (Photo: AP)
Advocates stand behind Speaker Pelosi on the day the Voting Rights Advancement Act passed in the House.
Addressing Serious Voting Rights Issues Nationwide
The Voting Rights Advancement Act, H.R. 4, recently passed in the House and would remove barriers to voting. Discrimination at the polls still exists and our growing communities face challenges with access to the ballot box. We submitted testimony in support of the bill, and our new report with the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund and NALEO Educational Fund shows why we must protect our communities. Dispel the Digital Myth campaign aimed to raise awareness
Dispelling the Digital Myth for Asian Americans
In November, we held a week of action to combat the common and harmful misconception that all Asian Americans have high rates of internet access and strong digital literacy skills. Co-sponsoring organizations, part of the AAPI Tech Table, joined together to raise awareness about digital inclusion and literacy. We also held a webinar on the topic. Listen to the recording.

Help Us Continue to Advocate for Our Communities
Through our legal advocacy program, Advancing Justice | AAJC influences key civil rights issues that have significant impact on Asian Americans, Pacific Islanders, and immigrant communities, both in the courts and through technical assistance for our Community Partners. We pursue impact litigation in federal courts and file amicus briefs, including in cases before the U.S. Supreme Court, and engage with the broader racial and social justice coalition to advance key issues creatively. Our goal is to continue to build on this work in the next year, and we graciously ask for your help! Because of a number of generous donors, we currently have an exciting opportunity to match all litigation campaign gifts, so please, support our litigation campaign.

Protect Yourself and Loved Ones From Gift Card Scams
In this season of giving, unfortunately, we must also be aware of fraud and gift card scams to protect ourselves and our loved ones and lift up how our communities can identify and protect themselves against such fraud. According to AARP, 72 percent of Asian American elders are susceptible to scams. Bad actors may target our communities for fraud through phone, email, in-person engagement, or online activities. Our Google partners developed a guide on how to protect your family and friends this holiday season. Please read and share widely.
