Dear John,
For several months, I have received a lot of outreach constituents who are affected by inflation. We are making progress to lower the costs of gas and other goods, but I know working class communities and families are still feeling the pain of rising prices.
Today, I am proud to share that my colleagues and I passed the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022, which will help fight inflation, lower costs, and tackle the climate crisis. This historic investment will significantly reduce prescription drug prices and healthcare costs, increase clean energy while lowering energy costs, and force big corporations and the ultra-wealthy to pay their fair share. You can watch my video statement about this transformative legislation here.
Specifically, the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 will:
● Reduce prescription drug prices and healthcare costs by allowing Medicare to negotiate drug prices, put a cap on out-of-pocket costs to $2,000 for all recipients, and lower ACA healthcare premiums for millions of Americans.
● Caps Insulin Costs at $35 A Month for Seniors and Individuals with Disabilities on Medicare. Louisiana consistently experiences higher rates of both adult and pediatric diabetes as compared to the rest of the country, and it’s estimated that about 91,000 Louisianians with this condition could benefit from $35 monthly caps on their insulin costs following the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act.
● Fight the climate crisis and increase domestic clean energy. The biggest investment in climate action in our nation’s history, the $370 billion in investments will lower energy costs for ratepayers, increase clean energy production and help reduce U.S. carbon emissions by 40% by 2030.
● Eliminate tax loopholes exploited by the wealthy and require them to pay their fair share in taxes. This provision will NOT create new taxes on small businesses or families making $400,000 or less.
With this bill we showed that Democrats are committed to putting people over politics and bringing progress to Congress. Louisianians sent me to Washington to fight for a better America, and to help make their lives a little bit better, and the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act is a significant step toward that goal. Onward and Upward!
Sincerely,
Troy A. Carter, Sr. Member of Congress
