Yesterday, Congress passed the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), legislation that allocates $369 billion for investments in renewable energy and combating climate change.
Not only will this bill significantly reduce our country’s greenhouse gas pollution, it will also save thousands of lives each year. According to a new study from the nonpartisan analysis firm Energy Innovation, the climate provisions in this bill are projected to prevent the premature deaths of up to 3,900 people from air pollution annually by 2030.
The IRA takes huge steps towards moving us away from air-polluting fossil fuels and towards clean energy sources like wind and solar. Not only does it provide tax credits to deploy more clean energy, it also creates new incentives to bring manufacturing back here to America of solar panels, electric vehicles, wind turbines, and more.
Energy Innovation estimates that the IRA could help reduce U.S. emissions by up to 41% by 2030. That gets us a long way towards reaching our climate goals, but there will still be more work to do! We need to help our SEEC Members continue the momentum and keep pushing for more legislation like the IRA that takes meaningful steps towards reining in climate change. Now we are counting on you to help our SEEC members pass climate, clean energy and environmental justice policies in the 117th Congress while we undo the damage of the Trump Administration.
