Hey Friend,
It’s been a whirlwind for gun violence prevention legislation recently. In
response to the significant waves of mass shootings, Congress has been
working to pass legislation to try to end this nightmare.
The most expansive and impactful is the recently passed [ [link removed] ]Bipartisan
Safer Communities Act. This legislation addresses a range of issues
including more funding for mental health services, additional funding for
states to implement extreme risk protection orders, adding convicted
domestic abusers in dating relationships to the National Instant Criminal
Background Check System (NICS), and an enhanced review process for gun
purchasers under the age of 21.
The [ [link removed] ]United States House also recently passed an assault weapons ban,
[ [link removed] ]H.R. 1808 on Friday, July 29th, 2022. This is the first time an assault
weapons ban has been passed since 2004. The next stop would be the United
States Senate. We know banning assault weapons works as a study from
[ [link removed] ]Northwestern University claims the federal assault weapons ban of 1994
prevented as many as 11 mass shootings while it was active from
1994-2004.
We recently worked on an updated extremism report that addresses the link
between extremism and gun violence. This [ [link removed] ]report also advises policy
recommendations including some of the policies discussed above. Please
take a look at our report and share it with your friends and family.
We will continue providing updates on future legislation, current
legislation, and implementation efforts moving forward!
