This past week, Republican House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy went to Rhode Island to raise money for a Republican House candidate, saying that he wants to "turn RI-2 red." Bold progressive candidate David Segal is running for this open seat to replace Democratic Rep. Jim Langevin, who is not seeking re-election.
David is one of the top anti-monopoly fighters in the country. He is a nationally recognized progressive who co-founded Demand Progress. He has a long history of building coalitions based on bold, populist anti-corruption and anti-monopoly policies, including holding Big Tech accountable.
This is usually a safe Democratic seat -- but the national political climate has Republicans gunning for it.
The Boston Globe asked David for a comment on McCarthy's visit. David's response makes it clear why we need him in Congress -- and why he's the best-suited Democrat to win the general election:
"Few better represent the false populism that’s being purveyed by the Republican Party than McCarthy himself, who leads them as they do the bidding of the world’s biggest corporations -- while pretending to care about everyday people.
"The best way to beat Republicans, here and everywhere, is to nominate candidates with genuine records of pushing back against corporate special interests and making gains for working families."
The Republican Party -- led in the House by McCarthy -- won’t take on the corporate special interests that block progress on critical issues like supporting working families, protecting our environment, securing universal health care, and more.
Nor will David's Republican opponent, who David first met as a local lawmaker -- when the Republican was a lobbyist for one of the world’s biggest insurance companies.
David has a decades-long track record of standing up to powerful corporate interests and making progress that helps everyday people.
That’s why we know he's the best candidate to win the general election and keep RI-2 blue, and advance a progressive-populist agenda in Congress.
Thanks for being a bold progressive.
