John, did you see this important message from last week about our resilient election system? With your help, we'll turn out volunteers in force this November — so that we're ready for anything.
John, Colorado just encountered the first high-profile election denial of the 2022 election cycle.
The great news? The system worked and defused false allegations. Now let’s keep fighting, so we’re ready for a wave of similar claims this fall.
Tina Peters, one of the leading national figures in election denial, lost big in the GOP primary for Colorado Secretary of State. She’s infamous for parroting Trump’s false claims about 2020 – to the point where she compromised the security of Mesa County voting machines in an attempt to “expose” nonexistent meddling.
So predictably, after she lost, she went crying to extremist media – scamming her followers out of hundreds of thousands of dollars to pay for an unnecessary recount.
But our voting system overcame the challenge. County election officials across the state fairly and impartially completed the recount, which confirmed the original result and showed a conclusive loss.
John, simply put, our system worked. But Tina Peters isn’t the first – and won’t be the last – person to lose an election, then try and overturn the results.
Her tactic has unfortunately become commonplace among far-right Republicans who are quick to take a page out of Trump’s playbook, which means we need to do even more to bolster our nonpartisan election officials against these threats.
Did you know 1 in 3 GOP nominees for November who’ve been selected so far are outright election deniers? That’s dozens of candidates for high-profile offices like Governor and Secretary of State, and hundreds overall! [1]
Some of these candidates will lose – meaning we can expect dozens of bad faith, conspiracy-laden election challenges, just like Tina’s. And even worse, some of them will win – putting followers of Trump’s Big Lie in charge of their state’s elections in 2024!
Colorado’s example proves our democracy is strong enough to handle these threats if we work together, which is why I’m glad to report thousands of members like you have come forward to support election protection.
That’s thousands of volunteers who can work directly in their communities, pushing back against election disinformation and overcoming obstacles to the ballot.
We’re holding trainings as I write you — tailored to each state and jurisdiction’s specific election rules.
And in an environment where we know there will be litigation and other election denial attempts, we’re equipping them so they’re ready for anything – and can’t afford to turn any volunteer away for lack of resources.
Each additional volunteer we field costs us $50. This covers the expert training, legal backup, and tech infrastructure to support them during primaries, early voting, and Election Day.
John, your $50 investment (or any amount you can spare) translates into thousands of voters getting to cast their ballots free of fear or intimidation. Will you sponsor a volunteer today and help election officials stop this cycle of election denial?
John, it’s encouraging to see our courts and democracy push back against attempts at sabotage.
Now let’s do our part to help elections run smoothly, and not give extremists a foothold to attempt anything worse.
Thanks,
Sylvia Albert, Director of Voting and Elections
