Dear MoveOn member,
In the 2016 primary debates, Democrats were asked an average of 2 questions about foreign policy per debate. On the other side, Republicans were asked an average of over 5 questions about foreign policy in each debate.1
I don't need to tell you who went on to win the 2016 presidential election.
Foreign policy is a core fear-mongering tool of the Republican Party—conservatives try everything from ignoring climate change and its global implications to demonizing immigrants and Muslims or instilling the fear of "terrorism" and war. And, oftentimes, Democrats fall into the trap. With the CNN debates coming up next week, we still have time to correct the course. It's important Democratic candidates begin practicing how to successfully counteract Donald Trump on foreign policy now—not repeat the mistakes of 2016.
Just this week, Donald Trump said that he could kill 10 million people in Afghanistan if he wanted to.2 In the last few months, he cut off humanitarian aid to Palestine, threatened Iran with war, and increased military presence at the US-Mexico border.
If we want a Democratic candidate to win in 2020, Democratic contenders must learn how to answer and argue on behalf of progressive foreign policy principles and stances.

Democrats, the media, and debate hosts can't keep pushing these issue under the rug in the hopes that they will go away. They won't.
Sign the petition to CNN if you agree that it's time to seriously address foreign policy and all the implications it brings to our domestic policies—including increasingly militarized police and a bloated pentagon budget—on the debate stage next week.
Thanks for all you do.
