Dear Friend,

I have some huge news for New Mexico! Today, I just cast one of the most consequential votes for New Mexico’s families in generations. The Inflation Reduction Act, the largest investment in clean energy and climate action in history and historic reductions in health care and prescription drug costs, is on its way to the President’s desk.

This bill will make a huge difference in the lives of every New Mexican. Here are just a few of the ways the Inflation Reduction Act will help you:

  • Increasing access to health care: New Mexican families with employer-based health coverage will save an average of nearly $3,500 per year.
  • Lowering the cost of prescription drugs: New Mexican Medicare recipients won’t pay more than $2,000 per year for their prescriptions – no matter how much their medications currently cost. And this bill caps the cost of insulin for Medicare recipients at $35 per month for all Americans.
  • Creating clean energy jobs: Incentivizes companies to make clean energy technology in America – creating clean energy jobs for New Mexican workers.
  • Lowering utility bills by making energy-efficient technology affordable: New Mexicans who want to save on their utilities and save our planet can now do so affordably through individual tax credits for electric vehicles and solar panels.

This bill makes the largest investment in combating climate change ever – and as someone who has worked to combat climate change for my entire career, this is not something I say lightly. Climate change is an existential crisis, and the Inflation Reduction Act takes a huge step forward to meet the urgency of this moment by cutting emissions by 40% by 2030.

The Inflation Reduction Act pays for itself by closing tax loopholes for big corporations. It will not raise taxes on anyone making less than $400,000 per year. This money will actually reduce the deficit—paying down the national debt which will lower inflation and lessen costs on New Mexican families.

These are all commonsense policies—New Mexicans should be able to afford to get the health care they need and we must take care of our planet in the face of the climate change.

Unfortunately, not a single House or Senate Republican voted for this bill. These wins were made possible by Democratic members of Congress and President Biden, who have fought for months to get this bill across the finish line to deliver meaningful investments for our communities.
