FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
UPDATE: County Transfer Station Closure Notice
Ovenell Site Temporarily Closed to Self-Haul Garbage
The Skagit County Transfer & Recycling Station on Ovenell Road remains closed to all self-haulers of garbage until further notice.
"A piece of essential equipment used by our contractor, Republic, to load containers onto rail cars failed earlier this week. This compounded the issue of garbage already stockpiled at the transfer station," explains Margo Gillaspy, Skagit County Solid Waste Division Manager. "We have been grappling for some time now with an existing capacity issue for garbage at the transfer station."
"Staff are doing everything they can to work with Republic to resolve the issue ASAP and are managing the site to continue allowing commercial haulers to continue to bring in waste," says Mike See, Assistant Director of Public Works.
The transfer station is still open to recycling, appliances, and household hazardous waste drop-off. Normal hours of operation for garbage, recycling, appliances drop-off: Monday through Sunday, 8:30 AM - 6 PM. The Household Hazardous Waste Facility located at the Skagit County Transfer & Recycling Station is open Monday through Friday, 10 AM - 4 PM.
The Clear Lake Compactor Site and the Sauk Transfer Site remain open for normal operations; both of these sites accept household garbage only.
