Dear neighbor,
As someone who came to Congress with the goal of tackling climate change, I’m ecstatic that the House passed the Inflation Reduction Act – the largest action Congress has ever taken on climate. Not only does this bill designate billions of dollars in clean energy incentives, but it also tackles the high cost of living and health care challenges many Americans are facing. The bill makes historic strides to lower prescription drug prices for Medicare beneficiaries by empowering the government to negotiate the price of high-cost medications and capping out-of-pocket costs. It also lowers energy costs for families; makes our tax code fairer; and fights inflation by achieving hundreds of billions in deficit reduction. This legislation is truly a remarkable accomplishment and it shows what we can accomplish when we put people over politics. I look forward to President Biden signing it into law soon.
I’m pleased the President signed another bill into law this week to lower costs and create jobs for American families – the CHIPS and Science Act. This new law is a historic investment in American jobs and chip manufacturing that will boost American competition on the world stage. Learn more about the new manufacturing law here.
And adding on to a strong week of legislative accomplishments For the People, President Biden signed the Honoring Our PACT Act into law to ensure veterans who were exposed to toxins during their time in the service have access to the benefits and care they need. Democrats are putting people over politics and fighting for Americans.
Here’s a look at some other items I’ve been working on:
- Announced a $330,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation to expand Santa Monica’s exemplary Big Blue Bus system.
- Led three bipartisan letters to the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE), bringing attention to the climate-forward protein sector, which has the power to help combat hunger and climate change around the world.
- Called on the U.S. State Department to explore ways to clear the backlog of passport renewal applications after overwhelming demand and received a response on steps the agency is taking to address the issue.
