The state of California touted Project Homekey as a creative way to address the state’s housing shortage, and more directly, its growing population of people without housing.

But a free-market advocacy group has published a report suggesting the concept of buying hotels to convert them into housing was an expensive failure, with Sacramento specifically cited as an example.

Gov. Gavin Newsom deserves credit for recognizing that California’s irrational leap toward a fully renewable electricity grid by 2045 was moving far too fast. At the same time, he deserves criticism for continuing to aggressively push the transition.

Free universal transitional kindergarten for 4-year-olds was passed by the California State Legislature and signed into law by Governor Newsom last year in 2021. What seemed to be a win for working families who struggle to find childcare for their pre-kindergarten children, was a detriment to childcare facilities across the state – and we are now seeing the impact.

“Join us in California where we still believe in freedom,” urged Gov. Newsom in a political ad to Floridians — never mind that he barred California state government workers from ever traveling to the Sunshine State.  And while freedom may be just another word for nothing left to lose said the great Janis Joplin, when applying Newsom’s baffling notion of freedom, the strange result is that the more we’re free, the more we lose.
