John, it’s happening.
The House of Representatives just passed the Inflation Reduction Act, a climate and energy bill worth $369 billion dollars. Let that sink in. YOU did that!
This is a victory demonstrating the momentum of the climate movement over the last decade. Now let’s keep winning!
Our work must keep going, and we know there is more to do. The price of the passage of the IRA was West Virginia senator Joe Manchin’s compromises, including measures intended to boost fossil fuel production. Now, Majority Leader Chuck Schumer is working with Senator Manchin on a side deal that would allow for faster permits for pipelines — including the Mountain Valley Pipeline.
The bottom line is this: Congress can’t pass a historic climate bill and follow up with a fossil fuel permitting bill. We cannot allow Schumer to sacrifice our communities and our planet for Manchin’s vote. Our next win must be stopping Manchin’s permitting bill.
The IRA bill opens huge doors for the climate movement. We’ve won massive investments in accelerating the transition to renewable energy, speeding up the U.S. economy’s fossil free transition and significantly reducing emissions. Now we need to focus on stopping Manchin’s side bill.
Manchin’s proposed bill would require the Interior Department to sell at least 2 million acres of our public lands and 60 million acres of offshore waters for oil and gas leasing each year for a decade.
We deserve clean energy solutions with no strings attached or side bills offered for Senator Manchin or the fossil fuel industry.
John, we need any bill that includes fossil fuel expansion to fail in Congress. Can you please contact your representatives today and demand they vote NO on any climate side bills that support fossil fuels?
As we recognize this huge moment, we gear up towards the fights ahead. We will continue to build on our power to fight dangerous side deals that are at the expense of frontlines and BIPOC communities, and we will win.
Momentum is on our side.
In solidarity,
May Boeve
