When Connie was referred to Lovelace Women’s Hospital by her doctor, she did not expect to deliver her baby at only 27 weeks due to health complications.

“I felt myself shrink,” remembers Connie upon hearing the news. “I didn’t even realize babies could be born so early and survive.”

Despite the uncertain circumstances, Connie and her husband held onto hope with the support of the exceptional hospital workers around them. Throughout their daughter Lorelei’s 65-day stay in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, hospital staff provided top-quality care every step of the way.

A lack of access to care can cause complications and sometimes death for mothers before, during, or after childbirth. Although great strides have been made in this area, further improvements to maternal health coverage are still needed to ensure better outcomes for pregnant mothers and their children - like Connie and baby Lorelei.

“The nurses in the NICU at Lovelace Women’s Hospital are angels on Earth and the respiratory therapists are such blessings,” says Connie of the staff that turned their family’s emergency into a miracle. “They’re all remarkable people. I have no words to describe how amazing the neonatologists were. We will never forget everyone’s kindness.” Read Connie and baby Lorelei’s inspiring story>>
