The undue burden of prescription drug costs hits older Americans the hardest, especially as many rely on fixed incomes. Throughout my career, I have remained committed to lowering these costs and providing relief to families who need it most—and now, with the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act, these savings will become a reality for so many families across our community.
This legislation will dramatically lower costs for seniors by allowing Medicare to negotiate drug costs, lowering the cost of insulin to no more than $35/month for Medicare recipients, and establish an annual cap on out-of-pocket costs for medication. This will be life-changing for aging families, saving them thousands of dollars a year. It marks the most significant investment in healthcare since the Affordable Care Act over a decade ago, and it is long overdue.
This week I met Susan, who shared her tragic story of rationing doses, splitting pills in half, and even prioritizing which prescriptions she would refill based on which she thought were most important for her to stay alive. With the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act, Susan and millions of other Americans on Medicare will no longer have to face the horrific reality of deciding between refilling their prescriptions and putting food on their tables. Thank you, Susan, for your bravery and willingness to share your story.

Taking Historic Action for Families
Beyond reducing the cost of prescription drugs, the Inflation Reduction Act delivers additional support and relief for families. This legislation expands subsidies for healthcare through the Affordable Care Act, saving millions of families an average of $800 a year on premiums. It makes significant investments to combat the ongoing climate crisis, support green energy, and encourage domestic energy production to reduce costs for consumers. And it takes steps to help fight inflation, reduce the deficit, and lower the cost of goods across the board.
All these historic reforms come without any additional tax burdens on hard-working families. Instead, it will close existing loopholes in the tax code to ensure the ultra-wealthy and mega corporations pay their fair share. I was proud to cast my vote in favor of the Inflation Reduction Act, and I look forward to continuing my work to lower costs for families and support those who need it most.
