Team,
I know what it’s like to write three-digit – or even four-digit – checks each month to pay off student loans – because like roughly 70% of students in America, I’ve done it.
In my undergraduate years, I received financial aid and paid my bills by cleaning laundry rooms. But when it came to grad school, I had to take out significant loans to make it work.
Trapped by high-interest rates and debt that was large enough to be a mortgage in some places in my early legal career, I initially joined a private practice so I could afford my student loan payments instead of pursuing my calling: becoming a public attorney.
Now, as Attorney General, I’m fighting for debt relief for Californians by improving access to the Public Service Loan Forgiveness program. Americans should be able to pursue careers in public service without having to make that same difficult choice I made between the work they want to do in our communities and paying off student loan debt that holds so many people back.
This fight is personal: No one should have to carry crushing amounts of debt to pursue public service. Add your name if you agree.
The Public Service Loan Forgiveness program is designed to forgive the remainder of student debt for folks who have spent ten years in public service – such as teachers, firefighters, non-profit administrators, state employees, and more – and made consistent payments on their loans.
But the Trump Administration denied a whopping 99% of public servants who applied in the first round, a decade after the program was first implemented.
So we sued Betsy DeVos and the Trump Administration, and we won.
Now – for a limited time – the Biden Administration has waived key requirements for people working in public service to have their remaining student debt forgiven.
I’m working to ensure that the folks who make our communities what they are can access debt relief they’ve earned. Add your name if you’re with me >>
Thank you,
Rob Bonta
P.S. If you’re a public servant with federal student loan debt, don’t miss this chance. Take advantage of the Public Student Loan Forgiveness Waiver Opportunity before the deadline on October 31!
