Team,
As we get closer to November, the ‘dark money’ in Elissa’s race is starting to pick up. Just yesterday, the Americans for Prosperity (AFP) PAC – backed by the Koch Brothers – invested $71,000 in Elissa’s opponent.
This is just the latest investment in a relationship that goes back to Elissa’s opponent’s first campaign in 2014. During that time, he regularly voted against popular bipartisan bills that his constituents supported, in favor of policies backed by AFP. Here are a few examples:
Most recently were his 6 votes against deals that would bring 8,200 jobs and $9 billion in economic investment to Michigan’s auto industry. 5 of those votes were against an electric vehicle battery plant in his own district. AFP came out against the plant on the day it was announced. The month after Elissa’s opponent voted against the deal, they endorsed his campaign and began supporting him with hundreds of thousands of dollars in ads, literature, and organizers.
Another example: in 2016, the Michigan legislature passed an overwhelmingly bipartisan bill to close a $80 million tax loophole for auto insurance companies. But AFP and the insurance companies opposed the closure of this loophole – and Elissa’s opponent was a leading voice opposing the bipartisan bill, making him one of the few legislators to vote against it twice.
And in 2018, he voted to allow PACs and dark money organizations to hide their donors from the government and from public disclosure. This was part of an effort, spearheaded by AFP, to lobby for similar anti-transparency laws in states across the country. As Elissa’s opponent backed the legislation and successfully pushed to enshrine the Citizens United ruling in state law, AFP put up ads to help him get re-elected to the state legislature.
These examples illustrate the deep contrast between Elissa and her opponent. While his votes align with AFP’s interests – Elissa has pledged to never take a dime of corporate PAC money. She made this promise when she first ran for office because she never wanted her constituents to wonder whose interests she was fighting for – and she’s stuck to it.
In the next few months, the spending in favor of Elissa’s opponent is only going to get worse. Will you contribute today to help us fight back and show that corporate money can’t buy this election? [[link removed]]
