This is huge!? ? ? ? ? Friend,

Today is a day we have organized for, fought for, and voted for for more than a decade.

After years of intense organizing and relentless advocacy by our movement, both chambers of Congress have passed the Inflation Reduction Act, the single-largest investment in climate action in our nation?s history. In the coming days, it will go to President Biden?s desk, and he will emphatically sign it into law.

Thanks to this historic legislation, we now have a path forward to at least reduce climate pollution in the United States by 40% by 2030, boost clean energy and energy security, and lower costs for families. This means that with additional federal administrative actions and progress in the states, our science-based goal of cutting carbon emissions in half by 2030 will be within reach.

This is monumental ? and we have you, and one million LCV members like you, to thank for this progress. Your support allowed LCV and our 30+ state affiliates to run our biggest advocacy campaign ever over the last 18 months and deliver a ground-breaking climate bill across the finish line. Together, we:
? Conducted 400 events with members of Congress, cabinet officials, and other federal and local leaders Knocked on more than 575,000 doors in key states Engaged more than 27,000 small businesses Created highly-visible, media-grabbing art installations around the nation Ran hundreds of paid TV and digital ads to generate more than 250,000 emails to members of Congress and President Biden
Thanks to the movement we built together, we now have transformative investments of $369 billion to protect our health, our communities, our climate, and our energy security.

As people in the U.S. and around the world experience the deadly and devastating impacts of the climate crisis, including extreme heat, drought, wildfires, and storms, and as our nation reckons with persistent environmental and racial injustice and economic inequality, this long-overdue, transformational bill will bring urgently needed resources and relief to many communities.

But make no mistake, this bill is the beginning ? not the end.

While this legislation is critical to building a clean energy future that is safer, healthier, and more just for all, it also includes potentially harmful provisions that could continue to perpetuate our nation?s dependence on fossil fuels and subject frontline communities, especially communities on the Gulf of Mexico near oil and gas infrastructure, to further pollution and harm.

These provisions are inconsistent with our climate and justice goals, and so, in the months and years ahead, we will fight to block their implementation and minimize their impact. AND, we will continue to fight for equitable climate action on many fronts, including by pushing for bold executive action and continued progress in states and Congress.

This bill is a huge leap forward, and there is much more still to do. We cannot stop fighting until everyone can enjoy access to clean air, clean water, public lands, and a safe climate protected by a just and equitable democracy.

We look forward to President Biden signing these once-in-a-generation investments into law to help protect our communities from current and future climate devastation ? and we?re ready to keep fighting for continued environmental progress with the movement we?ve built together.

Onward,

Gene Karpinski
