‌ ‌ ‌ Weekly Wrap Up Friend, Washington Democrats have called their latest reconciliation bill the “Inflation Reduction Act.” That’s false advertising. I fought against this bill on the floor and voted no on raising taxes and against more reckless spending. Here are the worst provisions in this behemoth of a bill: Supercharges the IRS: It grows the IRS by hiring 87,000 new agents — making the IRS bigger than the Pentagon, State Department, and Border Patrol combined. The IRS should be focused on dealing with its unacceptable backlog of tax returns, not targeting working Americans with more audits. Raises Taxes: It raises taxes on working families, imposing billions of dollars in new taxes on middle-income Americans. It will also increase taxes on American energy production, driving up the cost of gas and utilities even higher when families are already struggling with inflation. Reckless Spending: It spends over $700 billion on out-of-touch programs that don’t match Iowans’ priorities, like having FEMA work on low-carbon building materials instead of on disaster recovery and spending resources at DHS to support “sustainability and environmental programs” instead of focusing on the border crisis. We don’t need more of this reckless spending. Tax Breaks for the Wealthy: It’s full of giveaways for wealthy Americans, like a tax break for buying a luxury electric vehicle. You can’t get more out-of-touch. Green New Deal Provisions: It misspends taxpayer dollars bulking up the EPA’s regulatory enforcement, hurting Iowa farmers in another display of Executive overreach, and wasting money on making USPS trucks electric. At the same time, the bill attacks traditional fuel sources like oil and gas, which will drive up prices at the pump and make utility costs skyrocket. These Green New Deal policies will only worsen inflation. Crushes Small Businesses: It raises taxes on America’s small businesses that are already struggling to survive — another broken promise by President Biden. Instead, we need to support Main Street by making small business tax cuts permanent. Best, Fighting Against Reckless Spending Iowans have been clear: they don't want tax hikes or any more reckless spending. Watch my floor speech: Watch Here Telephone Town Hall Poll Results It was great to catch up with Iowans during my telephone town hall this week! We discussed the harmful provisions in the massive spending bill Democrats are trying ram through Congress that will raise taxes and worsen inflation. I also took questions on the need to restore our energy independence, improve cybersecurity, and policies we could enact today to secure our border. Whether we agree or disagree, you will always know where I stand on issues that matter to you. During my town hall events, I like to get feedback from you. This week, I asked those on the call what priority they want me to focus on in Washington. Here are the results: Restoring energy independence - 45% Reducing costs and cutting taxes - 28% National security and foreign policy - 17% Education issues - 11% Photo Gallery: Meeting with Iowans It was great to be in Jones, Jackson, Dubuque, Delaware, Linn, and Marshall Counties this week to meet with local leaders, community organizations, and family-owned businesses. I'll always meet Iowans where they are, hear their stories, and take that feedback with me to Washington! Veterans Affairs Roundtable (Jones County) I met with the Jones County Veterans Affairs Commission and Administrator. We talked about resources that are available for veterans and how we can work together to ensure veterans are receiving the care they have earned. In Congress, I’m proud to have worked across the aisle to improve mental health care access for veterans in rural areas. Innovate 120 (Jackson County) I also had the opportunity to visit Innovate 120, a hub for entrepreneurship and collaboration in the community. They are helping turn ideas and dreams into reality here in Maquoketa and I love that they are engaging local high school students in the technology industry! Visit to Dubuque Flood Mitigation Field Site (Dubuque County) In Dubuque, I was joined by the American Flood Coalition to tour several flood mitigation projects, including the Bee Branch Healthy Homes Resiliency Program and the Bee Branch Creek Greenway. Thanks to Mayor Cavanagh and the City of Dubuque for leading this informative tour! We will continue to work together on restoration and mitigation to protect homes, businesses, and our entire community from future flooding. General Mills Cedar Rapids Facility (Linn County) I toured General Mills in Cedar Rapids and got to meet their fabulous team. Many of the products we eat every day – from Cheerios to fruit snacks – are made right here in Eastern Iowa. It was great to hear more about their recent investments and growth in Cedar Rapids. Kendrick Forest Products (Delaware County) I visited Kendrick Forest Products in Edgewood – a family-owned and operated business. We talked about their concerns with continued federal overspending and the negative impact this will have on our economy. Marshalltown Medical Clinic (Marshall County) I enjoyed touring the Marshalltown Medical Clinic this week. I’m grateful for our health care heroes who have dealt with so many challenges over the past few years and have gone above and beyond to keep our communities healthy. I was proud to secure federal funding to expand this clinic and it was great to see their caring approach firsthand during my visit. Two-Year Anniversary of the Derecho This week was the second anniversary of the derecho. Eastern Iowans are reflecting on all that we lost during this devastating storm, but also on how far we have come. I’ll continue working to bring home recovery resources and ensuring Iowans are prepared for future disasters. Watch My Full Video Field of Dreams Last year, the Field of Dreams Major League Baseball game came to life in Dyersville and millions of Americans learned what we already know: it’s not heaven, it’s Iowa. I am so proud that the Field of Dreams is in our district and that we had the opportunity to showcase all that Dyersville and Eastern Iowa have to offer. We are so lucky to call this slice of heaven our home! Community Highlights Had a great burger at 1st & Main in Dubuque this week in between my stops in the district!
