Bike and Pedestrian Plan
Bike Ped Plan
In early 2022, the city received a grant through the State Health Improvement Partnership (SHIP) from the Minnesota Department of Health and Dakota County in order to develop a plan for bicycling and walking improvements in the community. The master plan will be used to guide decision-making regarding future investments in and prioritization of improvements to the bike and pedestrian system, will provide a foundation for seeking funding assistance for improvements, and aims to result in a more bike-able and walkable Mendota Heights. Weekly Construction Update
construction
*Centre Pointe Street Improvements*
Bituminous Roadways completed paving on Commerce Ave, Lemay Ave, and the trails on Pilot Knob Road and Acacia Drive. The contractor will continue with concrete work in the Centre Pointe Business Park, Dakota Drive, and Waters Drive next week. Storm Sewer improvements were also completed on Dakota Drive. The contractor is looking to start work on Carmen Lane on August 20th.
*Wentworth Park*
Staff is working with a contractor to demolish the existing warming house building. The city is reviewing quotes on leasing a trailer for use as a warming house this season. Staff has also received calls regarding the condition of the tennis court at the park. The tennis court is proposed for rehabilitation in 2023 if the city is successful in securing a grant from the US Tennis Association.
*Highway 55/Mendota Bridge*
The eastbound lanes over the Mendota Bridge opened late Thursday evening. The lanes have been closed since late June as crews repaired bridge joints and resurfaced the bridge deck.
If you are traveling on I-494 and I-35E near Eagan and Mendota Heights, you will continue to encounter overnight lane and ramp closures as crews continue removing the forms from the new concrete on the bridge decks on Hwy 55 over the roadways.
Construction is expected to be complete by October. For the latest, visit the Hwy 55 Minneapolis to Inver Grove Heights project page [ [link removed] ]

NATURAL RESOURCES
Weed of the Month- Spotted Knapweed
weed of the month
Spotted Knapweed is an invasive species native to Asia and Europe. Spotted Knapweed is a biennial herb that gets its name from dark markings at the base of its purple flower heads that give them a spotted appearance. You may have noticed this invasive species along roadsides and fields. It prefers dry, sandy soils and can be found in a wide range of natural and disturbed habitats.
Spotted Knapweed forms a low-lying rosette and deep taproot in the first year. In the second year it produces a stiff branching system of stems with alternate leaves and small pink-purple flowers. In the second year it can grow up to four feet tall. Spotted Knapweed blooms June through August. Currently Spotted Knapweed is regulated as "Prohibited" under the State of MN Noxious Weed Law [ [link removed] ].
Spotted Knapweed spreads quickly via seed and can populate very quickly in a variety of habitats.
* **Control methods for *Spotted Knapweed*:*
* Removal should focus on plants that have not yet flowered. If the plant has flowered, cut off flowering heads.
* Pulled or cut plants that have already flowered should be bagged to prevent spread.
* Large infestations may be best controlled by herbicide treatment before flowering.
