After a U.S. district court judge lifted an injunction requiring the Department of Homeland Security to resume Trump’s abhorrent “Remain in Mexico” policy, the Biden administration ended the cruel policy earlier this week. This is good news all around and a hard-won victory for those who have been fighting to end this immoral and inhumane Trump-era strategy. However, as the wind-down begins, it’s now important to get relief to those who have been harmed by the policy and continue the fight to ensure the rights and dignity of all immigrants.

In one of the latest attempts from Texas to use immigrants as a political ploy, Governor Greg Abbott has been bussing migrants detained near the state’s southern border to other states. One of those destinations has been New York City, where more than 4,000 asylum seekers have been bussed in from Texas since May, often against their will and without food or any support. By doing this, Governor Abbott is exacerbating an already awful situation and further dehumanizing and traumatizing asylum seekers, which we won’t stand for. Meanwhile, in New York City, the community and local leaders like our alumna and NYC Councilmember Shahana Hanif have stepped up to welcome these asylum seekers with dignity. But if we want to put a stop to this cruel behavior, we need to work together and let Governor Abbott—and other policymakers pursuing similar actions—know that we won't tolerate their cruelty.

This week, our State of Pay report was cited in an MSNBC article on the barriers preventing mothers from running for and serving in office.

“Only four states—California, Michigan, New York and Pennsylvania—have full-time legislatures and were determined to offer a high enough salary for lawmakers to earn a living without taking on other part-time work, according to a report by New American Leaders.” Be sure to check out their full article and the report to learn how improving legislative pay improves representation for us all.

Congratulations are in order for Olgy Diaz, a member of our NAL family, who was unanimously appointed to the Tacoma City Council in Washington on Tuesday! She will be the first Latina to serve on the Council, which is important since Tacoma’s Latina population is 13%. Congrats, Olgy!
