This week we?re talking about education. Every kid in every district deserves to feel safe and supported in school ? that means investing in classrooms, supplies, teachers, mental health, extracurriculars, and so much more.?
Since my first day in office, I?ve worked to expand opportunities and improve outcomes for Michigan?s kids. I made the largest investment in state history ? without raising taxes ? to close the funding gap between schools in Michigan, and recently made the highest ever state per pupil funding with this year?s historic, bipartisan education budget. ?
That funding will help schools buy new textbooks and expand options for AP and honors classes. It also increases resources for special education programs, at-risk students, and career and technical education while expanding slots in free before-, after-, and preschool programs. ?
It also includes funding for the MI Kids Back on Track tutoring plan I proposed in May to expand learning supports across the state. This program would double down on tackling unfinished learning by investing in personalized instruction, like tutoring, which is a critical tool for parents to help their kids get caught up and on the right track after a tough few years. ?
Finally, to improve the on-campus experience, the budget invests a quarter of a billion dollars in school infrastructure to build or renovate everything from classrooms, computer labs, and libraries, and significantly expands teacher recruitment programs so we attract and train thousands of educators every year. ?
This budget is proof of what is possible when we put our students first and stay focused on getting things done.?
