Friend — a huge new climate bombshell has just dropped. The new 2019 Arctic Report Card reports that
carbon is now being released in massive quantities from the melting Arctic permafrost.
As the ground thaws, billions of tons of greenhouse gases stored in the soil have begun to leak into our atmosphere — creating a devastating feedback loop that will accelerate climate change even more rapidly.
The crisis is already here. Our window of time to act is running out.
We're asking for your help.
Make an emergency gift of just $5 or more to the League of Conservation Voters right now, before the December 31 deadline — our future depends on what we do next. A donor is tripling every contribution before the end of the year.
The rapid release of billions of tons of greenhouse gases into our atmosphere is just one of the profound changes the Arctic is undergoing as it warms. Sea ice is at record lows. The Bering Sea's "cold pool" — an expanse of frigid water that provides a barrier between its southern and northern regions — shrank from covering 56 percent in 2010 to just 6.3 percent in 2019. Indigenous communities are losing their way of life as their access to food sources is cut off.
Yet even as climate change wreaks havoc on the world around us, the Trump administration is making the problem even worse. They're moving ahead with plans to back out of the Paris Climate Agreement and blocking progress at the COP25 climate talks in Madrid.
We can't allow this corrupt administration to send us down the irreversible path toward climate destruction.
LCV is working in states around the country to build a movement against Trump's dangerous inaction on climate and working in the halls of Capitol Hill daily to demand that Congress take action where the president refuses to.
This is a deeply urgent moment — and we must address it with everything we've got.
We need your help to ramp up this work, and we need it NOW. There's no time to waste. Make your gift to LCV today and it will be triple matched (even $5 will help) »
There's still time to fix this. Thank you for sticking with us — with our environment — even in the face of great adversity.
Sincerely,
Gene Karpinski
