Border Angels Denounces Deportation Practices Causing Family Separation

ICE Enforcement and Removal offices, including the local San Diego office, are once again deporting people who show up to their regular reporting appointments. A practice that the Biden administration vowed to move away from.

During Trump’s administration, ICE officers were instructed to deport any and all individuals they could, terrorizing migrant communities nationwide, and ripping thousands of families apart. Upon taking office, the Biden Administration announced they would focus on prioritizing deportation proceedings of individuals with a criminal history.

Simply put, ICE’s policy seems to be: You’ll be deported if you don’t show up at your reporting appointment, BUT, if you do show up at your reporting appointment you’ll likely be deported. The migrant community’s trust in our law enforcement institutions is deteriorated by this practice of deporting people who are just doing what the People who have plans to return home to their families and whose entire life is here within the United States. We are outraged at the practice of deporting, mothers, fathers, and community members without notice or clear guidance.

This practice affects hundreds of thousands of people who have been issued removal orders by an immigration judge and who are still actively seeking a legal permanent solution to remain within the United States, as it completely takes that chance away.

Border Angels denounces this practice, and once again demands immediate action from our elected officials.

Shelter Aid:

Our friends at Volviendo a la Patria shelter celebrated Ms. Vanessa’s birthday, who is part of the shelter direction, with chiles rellenos. Volviendo a la Patria houses many diverse people, including these Haitian migrants trying chiles rellenos for the first time.

Thanks to your generous donations and helping feed our migrant siblings, we continue to support 18 shelters in Tijuana!

Title 42 Exemptions

We are so grateful to continue with Title 42 exemptions, a process exclusive to asylum seekers who have been in our supported shelters. This past week, we presented migrants at the border with the help of Raul, Vanessa, and all of our friends at Volviendo a la Patria shelters. Now that the asylum seekers have safely crossed shared the shelter shared the following message:

“God is good God works miracles and helps the most needy people God does not forget you He is always helping us I want to thank Border Angels infinitely. And to all the people who are in charge of that organization, thank you very much for changing lives of many people for helping them to have a better future so that their lives are no longer in danger so that they do not have to suffer anguish from thinking that tomorrow they may come and hurt them no more anguish for these people thank you very much because you change lives God bless you all to each one of the people Thank you thank you for everything it is a very great satisfaction that I cannot express it with words I thank God for that God bless you love and peace 🙏✌️💛🖤 💜💚 ❤️ for a better world 🥁🎉🙌🙌 thank you very much Don Manuel Ocaño for everything you do on top of being a journalist, reporter, photographer, cameraman, and much more. Authorities said he died after falling from the U.S.-Mexico border wall. His family has doubts
Few details are publicly available about how a Mexican citizen died in federal custody in a parking lot just west of the Otay Mesa Port of Entry more than six months ago.

Hours after Border Patrol detained Joel Reyes Muñoz, 38, on Jan. 12, he “became ill and eventually unresponsive,” according to a press release Customs and Border Protection issued two days later. Authorities suspected Reyes Muñoz crossed the U.S.-Mexico border illegally.

Now new details have emerged in records obtained by inewsource that raise questions about whether Reyes Muñoz’s death could have been prevented.

Reyes Muñoz died from blunt force injuries after “apparently” falling from the U.S.-Mexico border wall, according to his recently updated death certificate.

That detail places Reyes Muñoz among a growing list of migrants fatally wounded after falling from the U.S.-Mexico border wall. But the still thin details surrounding his death also raise questions for Reyes Muñoz’s family and immigration reform advocates about whether authorities took appropriate steps to prevent his death.

Joel Reyes Muñoz is one of 13 people who’s families we have helped through our Volviendo A Casa program, through which we help families of those who have passed away crossing the border by paying funeral expenses or transportation.

Asylum wait lists at US border frustrate, confuse others
U.S. Customs and Border Protection began taking 70 asylum-seekers a day in San Diego in late April — half chosen by Al Otro Lado, which prioritizes how long migrants have waited, and half by Border Angels, which selected from Tijuana migrant shelters.

The Biden administration says it prioritizes the most “vulnerable” — which may include LGTBQ migrants, those with severe medical conditions or those facing imminent physical danger in Mexico — but the criteria is vague and mysterious for many

Nongovernmental organizations play a “critical role,” helping select migrants and communicating with U.S. authorities, CBP Commissioner Chris Magnus said in a recent interview.

The Biden administration maintained Trump’s policy of denying migrants a chance to seek asylum on grounds of preventing spread of COVID-19, and a federal judge’s order has kept the pandemic-related authority known as Title 42 authority in place after it was due to expire on May 23.

The U.S. grants some exemptions to Title 42, but the rule has been unevenly enforced by nationality, with single adults and families from Mexico, Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador most affected.
