FIGHTING FOR THE ENVIRONMENT ON OUR DOORSTEP

It's been a busy summer so far at Keep Britain Tidy HQ. Here is a snapshot of what the UK’s favourite environmental charity is up to this quarter – and some simple ideas for you to support our work to protect the environment on your doorstep.

#BanTheFlamingThings

Nothing gets us angrier than environmental catastrophes that could have been avoided, so that is why, this summer, Keep Britain Tidy are calling for a ban on disposable BBQs [[link removed]].

The call comes as part of Keep Britain Tidy’s summer campaign, #BanTheFlamingThings, to address three forms of litter that pose fire and safety risks to people and our natural environment; disposable single-use BBQs, sky lanterns and littered glass.

Several retailers have announced temporary bans on single-use BBQs, but from today Keep Britain Tidy will be reaching out to retailers and asking them to do the right thing for the environment and take them off their shelves permanently.

If, like us, you think single-use BBQs are an environmental catastrophe, join us and take action to call for retailers to permanently remove them from their shelves today.

I’m joining @KeepBritainTidy and calling on retailers like (insert your chosen retailer) to PERMANENTLY ban single-use barbecues from their stores.

These environmental nightmares can cause wildfires and are dangerous for people and wildlife #BanDisposableBBQs #BanTheFlamingThings

Toby Tyler, father to eleven-year-old William, told us about the horror his family endured when his son, then aged nine, stepped in sand where a disposable BBQ had been used several hours before.

“The injury he sustained has been life-changing and after skin grafts, psychological support, wheelchairs and walking frames, two years down the line, he bears the physical and mental scars of the incident. He will carry these into his adult life.

“That’s why I started a petition to ban single-use disposable barbecues for good, and I ask everyone to join me”.

We have also been working with the National Farmers' Union, the RSPCA and the Fire Chiefs Council to call on government to ban sky lanterns.

Every year up to 200,000 sky lanterns are released in the UK. These floating flames are dangerous and the damage they cause to farm animals and property is well documented.

Join us, and 60,000 others, and sign our petition to ask the government to ban sky lanterns once and for all.

A record number of parks and green spaces across the UK reached the high standards required for a coveted Green Flag Award this summer.

A whopping 2,208 parks – the largest number since the scheme began 26 years ago – have proudly raised their flags.

The Green Flag Award, the international quality mark for parks and green spaces, is managed by charity Keep Britain Tidy under licence from the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, and sets the benchmark standard for the management of recreational outdoor spaces.

Earlier this month, DEFRA, Natural England and the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities announced a £9 million fund to help level up parks and Green Spaces.

Allison Ogden-Newton OBE, Chief Executive of Keep Britain Tidy said: “We welcome the funding announced today and are delighted to be working through the Green Flag Award programme to provide advice and support to those organisations in receipt of funding.

"We look forward to the day when we can achieve our aim of everyone, wherever they live, having access to a good quality Green Flag Award accredited park and the benefits that brings.”

Mucky pups! We're speaking out on dog poo

Did you catch our CEO speaking on GB News, speaking out on the issue of dog poo in parks and the demand it places on local services as part of #LoveParks Week?

Our research with YouGov found that around four per cent of dog owners admit to leaving dog’s poo unbagged on the ground! That equates to around 35.3 tonnes of poo!
