I'm so excited that Summer Lee is joining our progressive movement in Congress. In May, Summer went up against a corporate-backed opponent and won her primary election by building a campaign focused on the people of Western Pennsylvania.
Super PACs spent a record $4.5 million attacking Summer in the final weeks of her campaign, flooding the Pittsburgh airwaves with racist and sexist misinformation.
The harsh reality is that this is just the beginning of attacks targeted against Black progressive women running this year — and these attacks are a continuation of a long history of undermining the leadership of Black women in our country.
Establishment groups and corporate PACs with ties to the GOP have set their sights on defeating our people-powered movement for bold change. With less than 100 days until Election Day, we need to take on these right-wing forces and show them how strong our progressive, anti-racist movement is.
It's going to take a widespread, grassroots effort to keep our movement in Congress, so I have to ask: Will you consider splitting a donation between my campaign and Summer's today?
Like Summer, I believe in running a 100% grassroots campaign powered by everyday people — not special interests. It's because of donations from folks like you that I became the first Black woman to represent Missouri in Congress and Summer will soon become the first Black woman to represent Pennsylvania.
Now, I'm counting on this support more than ever.
You might not think $5, $10, or $25 goes a long way. But the truth is there is a lot of power in folks like you chipping in however much they can, as often as they can. If we keep working like this, putting our donations together — we can transform our politics and bring needed change to our communities.
